LEARN HOW TMS HELPED LESLIE'S REMISSION FROM DEPRESSION

Background

I first met Leslie on February 14, 2025, when she presented with long-standing depression, marked by low motivation, hopelessness, and significant disturbances in sleep and appetite. Despite trying multiple antidepressants—including Cymbalta, Effexor, Tofranil, and Wellbutrin—as well as engaging in psychotherapy, she continued to struggle with persistent symptoms. Lesley was referred to me by her psychologist, Dr. Nancy Weinstein, with whom I have collaborated for many years.

Completing a TMS Treatment Protocol

On February 19, 2025, we initiated a course of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) treatment. Her motor threshold was set at 39%, and her initial PHQ-9 score—a self-reported measure of depression severity—was 21, indicating significant depressive symptoms.

By March 12, after just 16 TMS sessions, Lesley’s PHQ-9 score had already dropped to 4, reflecting a remarkable and rapid improvement in her mood, motivation, and overall well-being.

Now, having completed her full course of 36 sessions, at Brandywine Valley TMS, we are thrilled to report that Leslie is doing phenomenally well. Her depressive symptoms have remitted, and she’s experiencing a renewed sense of hope, energy, and emotional balance.

Results & Feedback

Notably, Leslie, a smoker, reported a significant decrease in her cigarette cravings as her mood improved during TMS treatment. This unintended yet welcome effect aligns with the understanding that individuals with depression may use smoking as a form of self-medication to alleviate depressive symptoms. Nicotine stimulates the release of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin, which can temporarily improve mood and well-being. But as we all know, smoking comes with multiple health threats. However, as depression improved with TMS, Leslie found herself less reliant on cigarettes for mood relief, leading to reduced cravings.

Leslie’s experience highlights the potential dual benefits of TMS in treating depression and reducing nicotine dependence, offering a comprehensive approach to improving overall health and well-being.

Her journey has been deeply rewarding for us at Brandywine Valley TMS, and we are honored to have walked alongside her through this transformation. Lesley has kindly given us permission to share her story, and we are grateful for her openness in helping others understand what is possible with TMS.
